Virtual English Club: A Brief History of Prohibition in the United States

For a period of thirteen years, alcohol was illegal in the United States. It was a period called “Prohibition” and it happened during some of the most energetic times in American history.

Come join us for an online session that explores Prohibition in the United States and its long-lasting consequences. Third-year history student and America House volunteer Amber Breese will be talking about the story behind the U.S. decision to ban alcohol, how it led to the rise of organized crime and famous mobsters like Al Capone, and the unique loopholes some Americans took to beat the system and fool the government.

Get ready for not only a historical exposé, but fun trivia and an open Q&A. We will be breaking down fun vocabulary and showing historical examples. Bring yourself and your love for history to this session and find out how the period of Prohibition was intertwined with the “Roaring Twenties” that changed American culture forever.
