American Studies Club: Kansas City History in Today's Attractions

Much of Middle America is referred to as ‘fly over country’, but for many Midwesterners, it is the ‘Heartland of America’. Kansas City was one of the first towns in what was known as the ‘Wild West’ and much of that history can be found in it’s attractions. Located right in the center of the United States, Kansas City, Missouri displays that Midwest attitude in its surroundings. During this session we will discuss Kansas City history and how that history can be seen in different attractions and neighborhoods.

The presentation will be led by US citizen Ashly Emerson. More information about Ashly:

Ashly Emerson is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who lived in Kamianets Podilskyi, Khmelnytskyi Oblast. Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Ashly moved to Tempe Arizona to attend Arizona State University for her Masters Degree in Education. Ashly has spent many years working with students both in and outside of the classroom as a history teacher and marching band coach. In Ukraine, Ashly focused on practical English through Communicative Approach practices with her students, student centered based teacher trainings, and building awareness for media literacy and diversity across Ukraine.
