Baseball 101: Sports & Inclusivity

Regardless of race, class, and geographic location sports has been a common national pastime for people around the world and one of the contributors to cultural traits and values. America has introduced numerous popular sports and trends, but none of them as phenomenal and distinct, as baseball - the game, which has woven itself into the fabric of American life and identity!

But can it promote and support an inclusive environment to leverage diversity?

Let us provide you with some food for thought and fulfil your curiosity during your Friday leisure time. Together with Tom Gillespie, international scout, focusing on baseball talent in Europe, Africa, Japan and Korea, we’ll talk not just about baseball, but its wider influence on modern culture, specifically:

- Basics and history of baseball.

- What makes baseball unique?

- Individuals and team dynamics, failures and successes.

- Inclusivity in sports: what is Play Global and how it’s connected to baseball and inclusion? Women in The Gambia; Arab & Jewish cooperation in Israel; refugees in Uganda; bringing together race/culture in rural South Africa, broadening horizons in Kyrgyzstan; erasing caste on the field in India, etc.

- Baseball in Ukraine: what's next?

Information about the speaker: Tom Gillespie is Executive Director of US non-profit Play Global, who use baseball to develop teamwork and respect around the world. He is in his 9th year as an international scout with the Pittsburgh Pirates, following 10 years in game development roles with Major League Baseball International - where he worked with national academy programs in Europe while conducting coach education across Europe and Africa. He is currently focused on helping leaders develop and spreading access to the game of baseball worldwide. He is a proud lifelong learner who cherishes the opportunity to meet new people and experience different cultures.
