Is there a solution to the Donbas crisis?
With an on-going conflict in the east of the country, many people in Ukraine, including renowned political analysts, historians, politicians, opinion leaders, and writers, have come to voice their opinions on the potential solutions and ways out. America House Kyiv invites you to a conversation on the topic with American expert Alexander Motyl. Alexander J. Motyl, political science professor from Rutgers University, will discuss what Ukraine's priorities should be, in general and with respect to the Donbas, and assess which "solutions" are both realistic and best promote those priorities. The talk will be followed with a Q&A session. Simultaneous translation into Ukrainian will be provided.
ALEXANDER J. MOTYL is professor of political science at Rutgers University-Newark, with an expertise on Eastern Europe and a solid publication record on emerging democracies in the region. He served as associate director of the Harriman Institute at Columbia University from 1992 to 1998. A specialist on Ukraine, Russia, and the USSR, and on nationalism, revolutions, empires, and theory, he is the author of Revolutions, Nations, Empires: Conceptual Limits and Theoretical Possibilities; Dilemmas of Independence: Ukraine after Totalitarianism; The Turn to the Right: The Ideological Origins and Development of Ukrainian Nationalism, 1919–1929; and the editor of more than ten volumes, including The Encyclopedia of Nationalism. He is a contributor to World Affairs Journal, Foreign Policy, Huffington Post, Novoe Vremia, and an expert commentator on current political affairs in Ukraine.
Motyl is also a writer. His novels include Whiskey Priest; Who Killed Andrei Warhol; Flippancy; The Jew Who Was Ukrainian; and a work in progress, My Orchidia. His poems have appeared in Counterexample Poetics, Istanbul Literary Review, and New York Quarterly(forthcoming). He has done performances of his fiction at the Cornelia Street Café, the Bowery Poetry Club, and the Ukrainian Museum in New York. Motyl’s artwork has been shown in solo and group shows in New York, Philadelphia, and Toronto; his art is represented by The Tori Collection.

У той час, коли конфлікт на сході країни не вщухає, багато хто в Україні, включно з політологами, аналітиками, істориками, лідерами публічної думки, і письменниками, висловлюються про можливі сценарії розвитку та виходу з кризи. Американський дім у Києві запрошує приєднатися до обговорення цієї теми з американським експертом Олександром Мотилем. Пан Мотиль, професор політології Ратгерського університету, директор програми вивчення Східної та Центральної Європи, поділиться баченням пріоритетів України, в цілому та стосовно Донбасу, оцінить, які “рішення” є реалістичними та підтримують ці пріоритети. Після виступу буде можливість задати питання та обмінятися думками.

Олександр Мотиль – професор політології у Ратгерському університеті у Ньюарку (Нью-Джерсі) із спеціалізацією на Східній Європі та солідним портфоліо публікацій про імперії та нові демократії у регіоні.
