Unseen America
March 5 - April 5, 2019
Artists: Mario Montoya
Though it is amongst the most beautiful and interesting parts of the country, the American southwest is under-represented in the minds of many outside the U.S. This exhibition exposed the people of Ukraine to a lesser known wonder of the U.S. The landscape of the southwest is breathtaking and unique, and the culture is sharply different from what is considered typically American by most. Through this exhibition, the artist hoped to pique the interest and capture the hearts of the viewers, so that one day they may choose to visit the beautiful place where he grew up.
When the world thinks of the United States, iconic images of New York City, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. prevail. Movies and television have filled the imagination of most foreigners with the Empire State building and the Hollywood sign, however, there is much more to this vast and diverse country. Though it is amongst the most beautiful and interesting parts of the country, the American southwest is under-represented in the minds of many outside the U.S. This exhibition is meant to expose the people of Ukraine to a lesser known wonder of the U.S. The landscape of the southwest is breathtaking and unique, and the culture is sharply different from what is considered typically American by most.
Through this exhibition, the artist hopes to pique the interest and capture the hearts of the viewers, so that one day they may choose to visit the beautiful place where he grew up. This exhibit showcases photos from the Southwest of America: particularly New Mexico and Arizona. The author did not choose these places randomly. He specifically visited various places in his father's home town in Northern New Mexico - Albuquerque, including the house where he grew up. Even though his father grew up very poor and his family life was extremely difficult, he managed to make it through and have a family, a good job and a home. To reflect on his life, journey, and culture, Mario Montoya returned to his home to capture and analyze the path on which a person can begin at the bottom in America, work at the U.S Senate, and end up being a diplomat for the United States State Department. The artist wishes to support current changemakers and inspire others to believe that Ukraine can achieve everything through its young democracy.
