“Some say, “This is not the right time.” Some say they don’t exist. Also, there are those who prefer not to notice them.”
“LGBTQI+ In Defence of Ukraine” is an exhibition showcasing portraits of Ukrainian LGBTIQ+ during war: volunteers, servicemen, and servicewomen. The photographs, captured by Crimean photographer Alim Yakubov, are paired with personal stories collected by scholar and activist Dafna Rachok.
The exhibition is conceived as a dialogue with LGBTIQ+ individuals who, following Russia's brutal full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, transitioned overnight into defenders of their country, joining the army or volunteering. All of them risk their lives to fight for Ukraine's democracy and independence and resist the Russian occupation.

About the exposition
The exhibition highlights unity and courage of the Ukrainian people, with the LGBTIQ+ community being an integral part of this narrative. It emphasizes resilience and patriotism of LGBTIQ+ Ukrainian soldiers and volunteers. LGBTIQ+ Ukrainians have always contributed to the country’s development towards democratic values, and their role in the ongoing struggle for the nation's survival is crucial. Some say, ‘This is not the right time.’ Some say they do not exist. There are those who prefer not to notice them.
But right now, these individuals are defending our country alongside their fellow citizens, risking their health and lives, suffering wounds, and facing death. Despite their sacrifices, they still do not enjoy the same rights as their comrades in arms. This exhibition aims to spotlight the need for establishing registered civil partnerships in Ukraine. It also seeks to thank the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for its leadership in this process, particularly for considering draft law № 9103, “On the Institute of Registered Partnerships,” which has already garnered support from several Committees.
The exhibit was implemented with the support of the NGO Parents' Initiative TERGO, in cooperation with QUA - LGBTQ Ukrainians in America, the NGO Fulcrum, and the Union of the LGBT Military.
