Join us at America House Kyiv for a special event with Mikael Colville-Andersen, Danish urbanist, speaker, filmmaker, TV host, and photographer. Mikael has been in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war and has implemented a range of awesome projects here, such as publishing the book “45 Ideas for Ukrainian Cities,” the first Nordic therapy garden in Ukraine, Bikes4Ukraine, TORV Ukraine, and many more.
The event will feature a screening of “Detroit and Windsor” from The Life-Sized City, Mikael’s global documentary series about urbanism that explores the anatomy and vibrancy of the modern city, highlighting pockets of life-sized goodness and systemic problems in cities around the world. The Detroit episode will tell how in a matter of decades, the city went from one of the most prosperous U.S. cities to one of the most distressed, culminating in the municipality's bankruptcy in 2013. The story of Detroit's decline is well-known and now there is optimistic talk of the city's revival - the phoenix rising from the ashes metaphor is rampant. But the focus on downtown revival ignores the plight of the greater population at large. Daily life is still a struggle for the vast majority of the city's citizens. But they are a resilient people, and they insist on fighting for a more humane and livable city.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with Mikael, where we will talk about urban challenges in different parts of the world, in the US and Ukraine in particular. We will also discuss Mikael’s book “45 Ideas for Ukraine Cities,” the first book about post-war reconstruction in Europe in the 21st century that contains a list of great urban ideas for Ukrainian cities and towns.
