All languages use verbal humor and wordplay, but forms can vary widely across cultures. Join us at 19:00 on September 22nd for a presentation and discussion of the recently published book New American Spoonerisms (2023) and creative use of speech error and wordplay in English.
During this in-person session at America House Kyiv, led by Clemens Poole, you’ll practice your English-speaking skills and learn about the English-language spoonerism: the act of interchanging the first syllable of two or more words, a common but little-studied example that exists at the intersection of deliberate wordplay and involuntary speech error.
The new book New American Spoonerisms (2023, Perpetual Doom, New York, USA) by artists Clemens Poole and Sarah La Puerta is the first every compendium of common USAmerican spoonerisms, which opens up a discussion about finding humor and utility in speech error and wordplay, and the sometimes blurred line that can separate these two uses of language.
📍 The deadline to register is September 21st by 10:00 AM.
The event will take place at America House Kyiv (Mykoly Pymonenka Street 6.) Please familiarize yourself with the rules of admission before your visit. Remember to bring your passport or driver’s license to enter America House Kyiv.
