Arts, Fashion & Creativity—Why They Matter In Wartime

Is there a place for arts, fashion, and design in the midst of emerging global challenges, historical shifts and war? Hear perspectives and experiences from Ukraine’s “creative front” in dialogue with American peers and experts from the creative industries.

Join us on May 24th for a discussion on the role of arts, fashion and creativity in wartime, and why they matter. Our panelists will share their practical experience and insights on implementing creative campaigns in times of crisis, and uncover how fashion, design and ingenuity intersect and function on local and global levels today and tomorrow. 

Anna and Nadiia Pagava of GOGŌLA Agency will share their experience of working between Ukraine and the U.S. through the full-scale invasion to bring Ukrainian brands recognition on a global scale. Kristina Skripka, co-founder of i am u are, will explore their collaboration with GOGŌLA Agency on the project, which brought Ukrainian design to New York in spring of 2023 through a multidisciplinary makers fair. US panelists Nicole McDonagh and Mike Hughes—award-winning Creative Directors—will share their perspectives on the role of creativity and art during times of social and economic uncertainty.

About panelists:

Nadiia Pagava, COO, GOGŌLA Agency, Head of PR & Communications, i am u are 

Nadiia has a Master’s degree in International Law and specialized in children’s rights protection before switching to the communications field in order to promote Ukraine’s image on all possible levels. As a COO of Gogola, Nadiia is leading a team of communication professionals to achieve world recognition for the agency’s clients. From the first days of the full-scale invasion Nadiia together with the team that remained in Ukraine, as well as teammates abroad, have been supporting and spreading the word about Ukraine’s talents. Currently resides in Kyiv.

Anna Pagava, CEO and Founder, GOGŌLA Agency, Co-founder of i am u are

Journalism graduate, acclaimed Ukrainian producer. 5 years ago Anna moved to Los Angeles to found GOGŌLA – international agency for brands communications, collaborations and production. When the full-scale invasion broke out, Anna made a decision to continue supporting Ukrainian brands and help fellow Ukrainians to be featured prominently on the international scene. With a view to preserving Ukrainian creative businesses during such turbulent times, Anna founded i am u are project, which united over 120 brands in fashion, tech and culture under one roof. Her key goal was to show Ukraine to the world the way we know it: creative, unconventional, a worthy equal to all of the countries in the world. Currently resides in Los Angeles.

Kristina Skripka, Hospitality expert, Foodies agency co-founder, Co-founder of i am u are

With a background in education, Kristina is an established hospitality expert from Ukraine, known through the successful case of BURSA Hotel – an art-focused multidisciplinary project and member of the Design Hotels community. Together with her partner at Foodies agency, Kristina is organizing private dinners and brand evenings for companies with excellence. As co-founder of i am u are, Kristina had a strong desire to bring modern solutions and strong Ukrainian DNA to the U.S. to showcase the power of Ukraine’s creative talents. Currently resides in New York.

Nicole Michels McDonagh — Group Creative Director/Writer

Nicole Michels McDonagh is an Adweek Creative 100 honoree whose work has been recognized by Cannes, The One Show, Effies, D&AD, Communication Arts, Clios, ADDYs, Archive, and Fast Co’s World Changing Ideas. She’s been privileged to serve alongside creative leaders from around the globe on The One Show jury and numerous influential industry panels. Throughout a 20-year career her most mind-blowing creations remain her teen sons, collectively known as Beast Mode. 

Mike Hughes

Mike Hughes is a multi-award-winning creative director, art director and designer with over 25 years of experience. He has lent his creative talents to brands such as Adidas, Converse, MINI and Fiat. He is also an avid writer and musician who has penned screenplays and launched his own band Mount Deed. He is a co-founder/executive creative director of the fashion and design magazine ROTOR. He is from the U.S. and currently resides in Montreal Canada.
