Indie Music, Indie Art. Artist Talk with Mark Arminski & Steve Walters

When art and rock and roll meet, a kind of magic happens, and from this electric pairing whole art forms have arisen. Join us for a talk with American artists Mark Arminski and Steve Walters, silkscreen print masters hailing from Detroit and Chicago respectively. Both artists will share their unique perspectives on how they have carved their own creative paths at the heart of which community and DIY (Do-It-Yourself) ethos lie. We will talk about the synergy that occurs between different segments of a wider creative community, how art and music always go hand in hand, and how independent artistic pursuits and shots into the dark can snowball into lifelong careers.

Join our discussion about the winding path of an independent artist from an America perspective on November 9th at 7 PM Kyiv time! We will be streaming this event the America House Kyiv Facebook and YouTube pages.

About the artists:

Mark Arminski is a fine art and print artist from Detroit, U.S.A. He is known for his masterful use of color and linear design. Melding 1960s psychedelic art with the grunge aesthetic of the 90s, Arminski became recognized as one of the foremost rock concert poster artists in America. He has created striking graphic images and concert posters for music festivals, emerging local bands and performances from international names such as Iggy Pop, Björk, Red Hot Chili Peppers, David Bowie, King Crimson and many others. The exhibition “Mark Arminski. Selected Works” is currently on view at America House Kyiv through December 17. Find out more about the exhibition here.

Steve Walters is a silkscreen artist, educator and print shop owner from Chicago, Illinois. Since 1991, Steve (under the moniker Screwball Press) has been printing posters, CD packaging, and a variety of other collectible items for Chicago's indie rock community. Over the years, he has had the opportunity to train and/or work with prominent Chicago local artists including Bob Hartzell, Kristen Thiele, Jay Ryan, Mike Benedetto, Keith Herzik, and Jason Frederick. Steve is also the founder of “Screwball Academy” where he teaches silkscreen to enthusiasts of all ages and “Burgoo”, a shop that promotes the works of local printmakers, craftsmen and artists.
