American Studies Club: Native American Influence on Oklahoma

Did you know that Oklahoma's state name is derived from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people”? Designated as Indian Territory in 1835, you can still feel the influence of the more than 67 tribes who lived there. There are more than 300,000 Native Americans who live there now in our landmarks, art, and festivals. With the recent Supreme Court ruling that about half of Oklahoma is Native American land, this small, often overlooked state has become the subject of international news. However, for those already familiar with the state's history, this news is somewhat less surprising.

If you want to learn and discuss the history of Native Americans in Oklahoma and how that history can be seen in different attractions across the state, join us!
