10 American Museums and Galleries to Explore from Home

Recently many museums around the United States, and the globe, have utilized the power of the internet to keep everyone entertained and enriched. It doesn’t matter in which part of the world you are, you can stay at home and still stroll through art galleries and museums.

Museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City) and The Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), offer online exhibits and virtual tours of their priceless artwork. The complete list below shares which U.S. museums are offering free, virtual access to their interesting artwork and sculptures. The webpages not only offer perfect visuals of the masterpieces featured in the museums, but also descriptions of who created it, the date, the mediums used, and curator commentary about it. These virtual exhibits provide an enriching and knowledgeable experience for anyone who decides to go through it and learn more about artwork.

Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts has utilized its YouTube channel to provide viewers with thorough, in depth presentations on various exhibits that are on display in the museum. Video topics include: “Learning to See, it’s all Relative,” and a lecture seminar about American Artist Hyman Bloom, entitled, “Spirituality and Art.” The wide range of artwork and topics that are discussed through these videos is enough to catch anyone’s interest!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City similarly has launched a site through Google’s Arts and Culture initiative. Currently, this site has 26 stories featuring a number of popular and intellectually stimulating exhibits that are featured at one of the United States’ most famous art museums. Online exhibits range from a presentation on “Christian Dior: Ball Gowns” to “A New Look at Vermeer.” In addition to the 26 specific online exhibits, this site also presents a over 200,000 online versions of the masterful artwork on display in the museum.

Museums are not the only place of cultural enrichment that are offering virtual visits. Some U.S. cultural centers, such as NASA, are also offering virtual tours, augmented reality and information sessions. Here, online viewers can experience firsthand what the NASA research centers are truly like and take a closer look into these intricate workplaces.

NASA’s Glenn Research Center website offers 10 virtual tours of different parts of the world-famous research center. Through this website, viewers are able to experience 360 views of each room, learn information through icons, and even see testing in action. This website allows for viewers to really step into the shoes of the NASA scientists and experience their incredible work, first-hand.
